Few things will inspire a trip to Rome like a good movie that is filmed there. Here are 5 we think are noteworthy.
The Talented Mr Ripley - Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps
This classic 90s movie showcases much of Italy, including the island of Procida, however some of its classic scenes take place in Rome around Piazza Navona, where Philip Seymour Hoffman's character famously parks his red car directly in front of Bernini's fountain, and the Spanish Steps, where two memorable scenes take place between Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow.
La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty) - Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, River Tiber, and others
Few movies in recent history have showcased the beauty and allure of the Eternal City quite like Sorrentino's masterpiece, The Great Beauty. Rome is featured throughout the movie, almost as a character itself, in locations such as the Aventine keyhole, the Baths of Caracalla, and others, but some of the most memorable moments include the haunting opening scene at Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, and one of Jep's reflective walks along the River Tiber.
Angels and Demons - The Pantheon and The Vatican
The film adaptation of Dan Brown's famous novel takes viewers to Rome as Tom Hanks unpacks the secrets of the Illuminati. Some memorable scene takes place at the Pantheon, under the eye of its famous oculus, as well as in around Piazza San Pietro in Vatican City (the micro-state that exists within Rome).
Eat Pray Love - Piazza Navona and others
During Julia Robert's journey around the world, she spends time in Rome discovering and falling in love with the food, culture, and language of the city.
La Dolce Vita - Trevi Fountain
No list of famous Roman filming locations is complete without the mention of the classic Fellini film, La Dolce Vita. The scene at the Trevi Fountain is among the most notable in cinematic history. Though we certainly would not recommend trying to jump into the fountain during your visit unless you want to spend a night in Italian jail. Just stick to throwing a coin in!
